The French drama Don't Bite, One Loves You from 1976 is a film by director Yves Allégret . The film is also known under the German alternative title Little French loves little French .

action

The 10-year-old Frédéric and his girlfriend Rose, who are of the same age, spend a few nice days in a small French town. There he lives with his grandparents. His father rarely takes care of the boy.

Frédéric and Rose do what all children like to do. They plan pranks . For example, they steal a sign from the church that indicates a holy well in which tourists offer coins to the saint. They put the sign on a lake so that tourists think that is the sacred spring.

When the tourists are gone, the two bathe naked in the lake and dive for the coins thrown into it. In the meantime, Frédéric's grandfather steals her clothes . Therefore both have to run naked back to the village. Frédéric is so angry that he pretends to throw himself off the roof. In reality, he just wanted to annoy the adults.

The nude bath together is not at all well received by Rose's father. And so he decides to take Rose to an all-girls school run by nuns . Visiting this school is strictly prohibited. Only after physical education does Frédéric manage to get hold of Rose. The changing rooms are located in a flat roof building. He can talk to Rose through a skylight while she is taking a shower. They agree to meet at a later date.

Meanwhile, Frédéric's life is not going very well. He doesn't get on well with his father, with whom he spends a few days. He imagines that this is not his real father at all and imagines a fantasy father who is a great hero . Frédéric helps Rose escape from the nuns' school and places her with his father. He hopes this will help him. Which of course he can't do that.

After Rose's father has picked her up, he makes sure that Frédéric cannot see Rose again. He takes Rose to a boarding school in Switzerland. And Frédéric's father also leaves him again.

criticism

“The film also contains elements of the cheerful vitality of French village comedies with the familiar roughness from children's mouths. In the otherwise serious context, it is unnecessary to caricature the nuns who run a feudal school. But these are only small blemishes in an otherwise dense and mile-fair staged entertainment film with a bit of depth that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of acting. "
