Belchite is a Spanish municipality with about 1500 inhabitants in the province of Zaragoza . The site was the site of the 1937 Battle of Belchite in the Spanish Civil War , in which the city was almost completely destroyed. Today's Belchite ( Belchite nuevo ) was rebuilt next to the ruins of the old city.

Belchite is about 50 kilometers southeast of Zaragoza . It is the capital of the Comarca (administrative unit) Campo de Belchite .

The ruins of the destroyed city were preserved in memory of the horrors of war. Today they are a sight of the place. They were the location for the films Pan's Labyrinth and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen .
