The Belize Zoo (full name: Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center ) is located halfway between Belize City and Belmopan and is the largest zoo in Belize, Central America .

Established in 1983, the zoo originally had the purpose of providing refuge for captured wildlife after completing a series of documentaries. In the years that followed, the necessity of bringing the local population closer to the fauna of their country was recognized. To date, the Belize Zoo is only home to native species there.

The zoo is about twelve hectares and around 125 different animal species from the region can be visited. A 30-hectare jungle lodge is attached to the zoo, where you can hike over footbridges and nature trails through the savannah landscape.

Together with foreign organizations, the Belize Zoo is reintroducing endangered animals in various regions of Central America .
