Belle is a song from 1991. It was written for the film Beauty and the Beast by Alan Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (lyrics).

Use in film

In the film, the song is used to introduce Belle and, to a lesser extent, Gaston. It accompanies Belle on her way to the bookstore in the village. She is seen by Gaston and it is learned that he wants to propose to her. The song is sung by Paige O'Hara and Richard White , the speakers for Belle and Gaston. In the German version, the song is called Belles Lied: Our City and is sung by Jana Werner and Peter Edelmann .

The recapitulation shows Belle's reason for rejecting Gaston's marriage proposal. It is sung by Paige O'Hara. In the German version it is called Belle Reprise and is sung by Jana Werner.

Awards

Belle was nominated for an Oscar for Best Movie Song .

The Oscar went to the movie's theme song, Beauty and the Beast . In an interview, the film's producer Don Hahn said that Beauty and the Beast received significantly more funding from the production in the run-up to the Oscars. It was feared that the votes for the three nominated songs (the third was Be Our Guest ) could be so distributed that none would win an Oscar.
