The Benedictine grammar school in Merano was founded in 1724 and lasted until 1928. After the Second World War , the school was reopened as a state-run humanistic grammar school " Beda Weber " , which was incorporated into the grammar schools in Merano in 2011 .

history

As early as 1705 there were negotiations between the Marienberg Benedictine Abbey and the city of Meran to build a grammar school. In 1706 the city sent a petition to the government in Innsbruck, the content was, among other things, the request for a contribution to the planned high school, but the funds were not approved. In 1725 the problem of financing was solved. The grammar school was built on the grounds of the Lebensbrunn residence, 8,000 guilders were donated by the wealthy salt merchant Johann Baptist von Ruffin , who came from Merano, and the city provided the remaining funds.

Marienberg was abolished under Bavarian administration in 1807 and the grammar school was closed. In 1816 Marienberg was rebuilt and school operations started again.

In 1928 the grammar school was closed by the fascists as part of the Italianization .

In 1946 the school was nationalized, thus made a public school and named after Beda Weber . Since 1987 there have been two disciplines: the humanistic grammar school and the modern language lyceum ( French instead of Greek ). The school building was restored from 1984 to 1988. The Merano City Library has also been located there since 1992 .

In 1981 the building was listed as a historical monument.

In December 2010 the South Tyrolean provincial government decided to merge the directorates of the Beda-Weber-Gymnasium and the Josef-Ferrari-Gymnasium. The establishment of the Merano grammar school came into effect at the beginning of the 2011/2012 school year.
