Benny Greb (born June 13, 1980 in Augsburg ) is a German drummer and composer who has also emerged as a clinician and educator.

Life

Benjamin Greb began playing drums at the age of six, but did not receive his first drum lessons until six years later. He also played the trumpet and piano . After finishing school at St. Stephan in Augsburg, he finally studied music at the age of 17 in Dinkelsbühl and later in Hamburg , where he still lives today.

Career as a musician

In the mid-1990s Greb was a member of the band Rubber Chicken , a trio with Thimo Endreß ( bass ) and Niko Warisch ( guitar ), which had success at the local level.

After moving to Hamburg, Greb became a professional musician. He supported Stoppok , Thomas D and Mark Forster as a sideman on drums, played pieces by Frank Zappa with the NDR orchestra and worked with the jazz musician Nils Wülker . A close collaboration developed with Strom & Wasser, the band of the songwriter Heinz Ratz , the band project Blue Touch Paper by the British jazz pianist Colin Towns and the Ron Spielman Trio .

His first solo CD with self-composed material, Grebfruit , on which he mainly used voices as stylistic devices , was released in 2005. In 2009 he recorded the album of the same name with the Brass Band project, which was heavily influenced by New Orleans jazz . After these very tightly conceived and ingenious works, Greb tried a different approach. He invited the Turkish pianist Sabri Tuluğ Tırpan and the bassist Martin Stumpf to the studio, and in just two days the exclusively spontaneously recorded and improvised record Two Day Trio was created . A little later he met the London guitarist Chris Montague, who proposed a collaboration with keyboardist Kit Downes; This resulted in the album Moving Parts in 2014 , followed by the live album Moving Parts Live , in which bassist Chris Hargreaves was there instead of Downes. “With his band Moving Parts, Benny, as band leader, realizes the more electronic side of his instrumental music, which is dedicated to the groove with jazzy improvisation,” wrote the musician portal Bonedo.

Benny Greb is an endorser at Sonor and plays an SQ² drum set . He has also developed his own signature snare in collaboration with Sonor . He designed a series of cymbals for Meinl and special drumsticks for Vic Firth .

Clinician and Educator

Greb is also active as a clinician and educator. His DVD The Language of Drumming was the world's best-selling educational film in the field of music after its release in 2009. He financed his second instructional DVD, The Art And Science Of Groove , through crowdfunding; the campaign achieved its goal in record time. Greb worked on the material for over seven years, which he then classified "according to the categories of time, feel, sound, physical and mental level".

His drum camps take place all over the world under the title "Benny Greb Master Session", whether in New York, Tokyo or Singapore, and attract interested drummers from all nations who want to improve their groove, work on their technique or get inspiration want. He runs three to four multi-day seminars a year, and he continues to be in high demand for clinics and master classes.

Prizes and awards

In 2016 he was awarded the ECHO Jazz in the category Instrumentalist of the Year national Drums / Percussion .

Modern Drummer magazine voted him the best clinician and educator in 2013 and also named his book “The Language Of Drumming” as the best textbook of the year. He was named Clinician of the Year in Drum Magazine for three consecutive years.
