Berent Schwineköper

Berent Schwineköper (born November 8, 1912 in Magdeburg , † March 8, 1993 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German archivist and historian .

The son of a pharmacist came from a family that belonged to the Hildesheim-Braunschweig pastor class. From 1931 to 1937 he studied history, German, art history and historical auxiliary sciences at the Universities of Göttingen , Vienna and Freiburg . He was particularly influenced by Alfons Dopsch , Heinrich von Srbik , Hermann Heimpel and above all Percy Ernst Schramm . In 1931 he became active in the Corps Teutonia Göttingen. In 1950 he received the ribbon of the Teutonia-Hercynia Göttingen. At Schramm he received his doctorate in 1937 on the subject of the glove in law, public authorities, customs and popular belief .

After visiting the Prussian Institute for Archival Science from 1939 to 1941 , he became an archivist at the Prussian State Archives in Berlin-Dahlem . In the Second World War he took part as a soldier. In 1944 he was appointed archivist at the Magdeburg State Archives , where he worked until June 1959. In 1955 he had a lectureship in document theory and palaeography at the Potsdam Institute for Archival Science for document theory and palaeography at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1958 Schwineköper had a teaching position at the Berlin Humboldt University for document theory and palaeography. He played a decisive role in ensuring that the aristocratic archives confiscated in Saxony-Anhalt after the war could be salvaged and preserved for future research. In 1954 , he was the first state archive of the German Democratic Republic to present a complete overview of the holdings of the Magdeburg State Archive for the Magdeburg Archive . In 1959 he left the GDR and became an archivist at the Freiburg City Archives . In 1961 he took over the management of the Freiburg City Archives and held it until 1977. Schwineköper has been teaching at the University of Freiburg since 1964 , where he was made honorary professor in 1972 .

His main focus was the regional and church history of Central Germany and Southwest Germany, city history, archival studies. In 1964 and 1984 he published studies on the Magdeburg rider . In 1972, he presented a two-volume history of the Magdeburg Cathedral Monastery of St. Moritz and the other Magdeburg collegiate monasteries in the renowned Germania Sacra series . His portrayal of royalty and cities up to the end of the investiture controversy , published in 1977 , in which the cities in eastern Saxony and northern Thuringia are the focus, made him known in urban history research.

Schwineköper was an extraordinary member of the historical commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1968), member of the Constance working group for medieval history (since 1974) and in 1990 became a member of the re-established historical commission for Saxony-Anhalt . From 1963 to 1970 he was a corresponding and since 1970 a full member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg . From 1965 to 1987 he was chairman of the Breisgau history association Schau-ins-Land .
