Bergfex.at is an Austrian internet platform for mountain tourism and alpine sports , and the largest in Europe in this field.

history

The website was founded in 1999 by Oliver Jusinger, Andreas Koßmeier, Andreas Reinhofer, and Markus Kümmel from Graz. It was the first website in Austria to concentrate on domestic winter sports because of the need to have uniform snow data for various winter sports regions available. For this purpose, ski areas were presented in a comparable, concise form. The website was programmed by the founders themselves. The project quickly gained a good reputation among those interested in alpine skiing and snowboarding as well as with ski area operators who were asked for the data.

In the following year, Swiss and Italian ski areas were also included, soon afterwards also German ones. The offer was gradually expanded to include cross-country skiing information, and then expanded to include summer tourism and hiking as well as mountain biking - also in a pioneering role, other mountain sports web platforms at the time concentrated more on mountaineering and climbing. As a result, the entire Alpine region was recorded, including Slovenia and France, and the offer was also offered in other languages. In 2007 17 languages were available, the share of non-German speaking readers was 25%.

In 2007, a supporting  company, Bergfex GmbH, was founded. At that time, the close contact with the operators had developed into a business model in which the focus was based on personal customer service and online marketing via factual information rather than pure advertising. The employees travel to the ski areas and also visit the hotel and restaurant operators who place a presentation on bergfex.at. In addition, there are partnerships with newspapers and other media that use the data researched by bergfex. Conversely, information such as detailed weather reports could now also be purchased ( ZAMG ). In addition to the contributions of the hotel operators, the placement of advertising banners and references to competitions by customers, also in the Bergfex newsletter , account for half of the income, and trade in the form of an online shop is also a small part of the purchase (various mountain sports equipment).

By 2010, all domains together (bergfex.at, –.ch, –.de, –.com) had already been the largest holiday portal for mountain tourism and sports in Europe (53 million visits, 5.3 million visitors in January 2010). In 2013, for example, the website bergfex.at was one of the three most visited websites in Austria with over 10 million visits and 70 million page views in January. In January 2014 the website had over 1 million visitors (unique clients), in January 2015 almost 120 million page views, 42 percent of the visitors came from Germany, 25 percent from Austria, the others mainly from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and Slovenia but also from southern and eastern Europe and the USA.

With the bergfex / Ski app , the portal was expanded to include mobiles in 2010 (OS and Android, 250,000 downloads in 2015). An app based on current maps is planned for ski tourers and mountain hikers .

offer

The website presents over 1700 ski areas from twelve European countries (Austria, for example, in full) and 525 tourist regions from seven countries in the summer (as of the end of the 2014/15 winter season). In addition to information on the destination as such, there is information on the operation of the facilities, accommodation providers, snow and weather reports, elaborately prepared maps, links to webcams and other up-to-date information relevant to trips and vacations. In addition, there are numerous tour descriptions for consistently easier hikes and bike routes, from family walks to summit tours, and also to attractions in the area.

The portal is available in 18 languages (2015). In addition to bergfex.at, domains such as bergfex.ch, bergfex.de, bergfex.it, bergfex.fr etc. and bergfex.com are also registered.
