Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler (about: 'Lured into the mountain - A fairy tale in 5 chapters') is the debut album by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was published in 1995 via Head Not Found and is the first part of a trilogy about the "dark aspects of Norwegian folklore".

Creation and publication

In November 1993, Ulvers demo Vargnatt appeared ; the musicians involved in it alongside Garm and Haavard , Exhurtum , A. Reza, Grellmund and Robin, left the band that same year. AiwarikiaR , Skoll and Aismal replaced them from 1994. This line-up remained stable until the end of work on the trilogy in 1996.

When recording Bergtatt , the band was supported by Lill Kathrine Stensrud, who contributed the flute and vocals. Sverd von Arcturus played the piano. The album was recorded at the end of 1994 in Endless Lydstudio in Oslo (indicated on the back of the album with the former name Christiania) with Kristian Romsøe as sound engineer and co-producer, it was mastered by Craig Morris at Strype Audio, also in Oslo.

Initially, Bergtatt was planned for a split release with Gehenna ; but then Gehenna released her debut First Spell in 1994 as a standalone EP on Head Not Found, presumably due to disagreements regarding the inclusion of the Voices of Wonder label . So Ulver also released her recordings as a separate album. There is conflicting information about whether Bergtatt was launched in late 1994 or early 1995. In Poland, the album was released on cassette in 1997 , in the same year it was re-released by Century Media with Kveldssanger and Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne Til Ulven i Manden in the limited picture disc - box set The Trilogie - Three Journeyes Through the Norwegian Netherworlde . Until now the album was only available on CD. Head Not Found reissued the CD in 2001. Finally, Bergtatt was also part of Trolsk Sortmetall 1993–1997 , a box set released in 2014 by Century Media.

Track list

The music was composed by Ulver, the lyrics written by Garm and supposedly translated into Old Danish by AiwarikiaR. In fact, however, it is more an archaized, poetic Norwegian, whereby the impression of an old language is also reinforced by the (sometimes freely imagined) orthography. The title of the album, Bergtatt , is a clearly Norwegian word.

  1. Chapter I: I Troldskog faren vild - 7:51
  2. Chapter II: Soelen gaaer bag Aase need - 6:34
  3. Chapter III: Graablick blev hun vaer - 7:45
  4. Chapter IV: Een Stemme loose - 4:01
  5. Chapter V: Bergtatt - ind i Fjeldkamrene - 8:06

Music, lyrics and booklet

On the debut album, Ulver mixes the “harsh vocals” and the “washed-out, whirring guitars” of Black Metal with acoustic, folk- influenced passages. Between these extremes, the one of the two following albums, Kveldssanger and Nattens Madrigal should dominate, there are mid-tempo parts where Garms with overdubs machined singing at a choir of Gregorian reminds monks.

The archaic lyrics tell the story of a girl who gets lost in the forest, is lured into the mountains by trolls ( bergtatt ) and is never seen again. This is a common motif in the Norwegian fairy tale world.

The painting on the cover (by Tanya “Nacht” Stene ) shows a gloomy, wooded mountain ridge, the background photo on the back cover shows a mist-shrouded, wooded ridge . The booklet contains black and white photographs of the then 18 to 20-year-old band members AiwarikiaR, Garm, Haavard, Skoll and Aismal in a wild, romantic natural setting. The lyrics are printed in Fraktur against the same background . On the last page of Beihefts explains Garm Ulvers belief in the supernatural and dedicated the album to "grim powers" ( Morskemaktene , one of morsk , bass ',' grim 'and Mørkemaktene , the dark forces' derived neologism ).

reception

According to Allmusic's William York , Bergtatt is an atmospheric rather than aggressive album that stands out due to its varied vocals and songwriting. It is an excellent debut and one of the highlights of Ulvers discography. Vampster's Captain Chaos finds Bergtatt "a bit kitschy in places and anything but mature, but no other Black Metal album of this time is more beautiful". For Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard, the album seems "very close to nature over long stretches and almost feminine in its vulnerability". The magazine included Bergtatt in its list of the 25 most important black metal albums of all time. Also laut.de notes that it is considered a "milestone of the genre."

Jan Leichsenring describes Bergtatt as a concept album , which in Black Metal co-founded the turning away from modernity towards local customs , romantic nostalgia and mythical supernaturalism. According to him, anti-modern attitudes, premodern legendary motifs and antiquated language correspond and reflect each other on this album.
