Berhaneyesus Demerew Cardinal Souraphiel CM ( Amharic ብርሃነ ኢየሱስ ደምረው ሱራፌል ; * July 14, 1948 in Tchela Claka , Ethiopia ) is Archbishop of the Ethiopian Catholic Church in Addis Ababa and Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Addis Ababa .

Life

Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel was ordained a religious priest of the Lazarists on July 4, 1976 . Until 1980 he carried out pastoral and missionary activities in southwestern Ethiopia before he was imprisoned in Jimma for seven months . From 1981 to 1983 he stayed in Rome for study purposes, where he also took part as a delegate to the General Assembly of the Lazarists, and then returned to Addis Ababa , where he carried out pastoral tasks until 1990. After the end of communist rule in 1991, Souraphiel became a professor at the Addis Ababa Seminary. From 1994 to 1997 he was Prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Jimma-Bonga .

On November 7, 1997 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Addis Abbeba and at the same time Titular Bishop of Bita . Cardinal Paulos Tzadua , his predecessor as archbishop of Addis Ababa and the co-consecrators Yohannes Woldegiorgis ( Apostolic Vicar of Meki ) and Woldetensae Ghebreghiorghis OFMCap (Apostolic Vicar of Harar ) donated to him on 25 January 1998, the episcopal ordination . On July 7, 1999 he took over the archbishopric of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa and at the same time became Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Addis Ababa. In December 2008, Souraphiel signed a resolution against the legal tolerance of homosexuality in Ethiopia.

In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis created him cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of San Romano Martire .

Presidia and memberships

Since 1998 he has been President of the Council of the Ethiopian Church and since 1999 President of the Ethiopian Bishops' Conference . Pope Benedict XVI In 2009 he appointed him as a new member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . Pope Francis confirmed this appointment on February 19, 2014 and April 13, 2015. On the same day, he also appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move .
