Berhaneyesus Demerew Cardinal Souraphiel CM ( Amharic ብርሃነ ኢየሱስ ደምረው ሱራፌል ; * July 14, 1948 in Tchela Claka , Ethiopia ) is Archbishop of the Ethiopian Catholic Church in Addis Ababa and Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Addis Ababa .

Life

Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel was ordained a religious priest of the Lazarists on July 4, 1976 . Until 1980 he carried out pastoral and missionary activities in southwestern Ethiopia before he was imprisoned in Jimma for seven months . From 1981 to 1983 he stayed in Rome for study purposes, where he also took part as a delegate to the General Assembly of the Lazarists, and then returned to Addis Ababa , where he carried out pastoral tasks until 1990. After the end of communist rule in 1991, Souraphiel became a professor at the Addis Ababa Seminary. From 1994 to 1997 he was Prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Jimma-Bonga .

On November 7, 1997 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Addis Abbeba and at the same time Titular Bishop of Bita . In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis created him cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of San Romano Martire .
