The Berlin-Dresdener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was a German railway company. It was founded for the purpose of building and operating a railway line between Berlin and Dresden and had the legal form of a stock corporation . The Berlin – Elsterwerda – Dresden railway line that was built is still in operation today in all essential parts. In Berlin it is known colloquially as Dresdener Bahn , north of Dresden as Berliner Bahn .

history

The company was founded in 1872 to build an additional direct rail link between Berlin and Dresden . The own line was opened on June 17, 1875. At that time, the two capitals were already connected by the Jüterbog – Falkenberg – Röderau (since 1848) and Lübbenau – Senftenberg – Kamenz (since 1874) routes. The realized route via Elsterwerda was twelve kilometers shorter than the existing one via Falkenberg .

The company was already in financial difficulties when it was founded. To avoid bankruptcy , the Prussian state government made a state-guaranteed loan possible . In return, as of October 1, 1877, operations management was transferred to the Prussian State Railways .

On January 24, 1887, a state treaty was signed between the Kingdom of Saxony and the Kingdom of Prussia , as a result of which the route became the property of Prussia on April 1, 1887, whereupon the railway company dissolved. This contract also stipulated that the Dresden – Elsterwerda section would be resold to the Saxon state on April 1, 1888. The locomotives and wagons of the Berlin-Dresden Railway were divided between the Prussian and Saxon State Railways .
