history

“The founding of Berliner Stadtwerke GmbH goes back to a resolution of the Berlin House of Representatives on October 24, 2013. On that day, the state parliament commissioned the Berlin Senate to establish an integrated energy service provider as a legally independent subsidiary of Berliner Wasserbetriebe. The decision of the House of Representatives stipulated, among other things, that Berliner Stadtwerke should only produce renewable energies and sell them on the Berlin market. The production and sale of energy from nuclear and coal-fired power plants are excluded. "(Berliner Stadtwerke)

After the sale of the former municipal Bewag to Vattenfall , the re-establishment of the Berliner Stadtwerke marked a re-entry of the state into the energy market.

Green electricity

Since the market launch in autumn 2015, the municipal utilities have only been selling climate-friendly electricity from renewable energies . The electricity comes from around 100 solar systems and 4 of its own wind turbines (as of September 2018). In order to support the goal of climate neutrality in Berlin by 2050, the municipal utilities are constantly building additional systems. In July 2019, an agreement was reached between Stadtwerke and Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH (BIM) to install more than five megawatts of additional solar power on the roofs of state-owned properties by 2023.
