Bernard James Miles, Baron Miles (born September 27, 1907 in Uxbridge , Middlesex , † June 14, 1991 in Knaresborough , North Yorkshire ) was a British actor .

Life

Bernard Miles worked as a teacher for a short time after studying at Oxford , but then went to the theater . His repertoire included, among other things, title roles in several Shakespeare plays . Throughout his career, stage presence surpassed his rather irregular appearances in movies. Miles was best known in the cinema for his impersonation of the child abductor in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), directed by Alfred Hitchcock . In 1979 Miles was raised to the nobility as a life peer and was then a member of the House of Lords until his death . After Laurence Olivier , he was only the second actor to be raised to the nobility.

In 1931 he married the actress Josephine Wilson , with whom he founded the Mermaid Theater in London in 1959. Their son is the former racing driver John Miles .
