career

Bernd August only had a relatively short amateur career, his greatest successes being winning the German championship in the junior heavyweight division in 1970 and second place at the European junior championships in 1972 in Bucharest . Both victories he won more than high school student of Bertha von Suttner - High School (now European School Bertha von Suttner ) in Berlin-Reinickendorf . At the age of 21 he switched to the pros and made his debut in his hometown of Berlin on March 2, 1973 against Herbert Ficks, whom he knocked out in the first round. In the Hamburg Ernst-Merck-Halle he defeated the German heavyweight champion Conny Velensek on May 16, 1974 over twelve rounds on points and became German champion for the first time.

In April 1976 Bernd August, who was the protégé of manager Willy Zeller and was coached by Werner Papke , boxed against Richard Dunn in the London Royal Albert Hall for the vacant European heavyweight title and lost through technical knockout in the third round. In 1977 he lost the German championship title to Kurt Luedecke , but in the rematch in 1978 he was able to defeat Luedecke prematurely. On March 13, 1981, he went to South Africa against Kallie Knoetze and lost by technical knockout in the second round.

In 1982 August defended his title against the new hope Reiner Hartmann . Hartmann, who entered the ring as a professional for the first time in Germany, had to admit defeat prematurely in the eighth round. On November 5, 1983 Bernd August faced Hartmann again and lost by knockout in round six. After this defeat, he hung up his boxing gloves and retired from boxing.
