Bernhard Blumenkranz

Bernhard Blumenkranz (born June 12, 1913 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; died November 4, 1989 in Paris ) was a French Judaist and historian .

Live and act

When Austria was annexed in 1938, Blumenkranz fled to France to continue his studies there, but when the war broke out in 1939 he was interned as an enemy foreigner in the Gurs camp in southern France . He was able to escape from the camp and ended up in Switzerland , where he was in 1945 at the University of Basel with a theological dissertation on Augustine's sermon to the Jews . Blumenkranz went back to France and received another doctorate with Henri-Irénée Marrou's dissertation Juifs et chrétiens dans le monde occidental . Blumenkranz founded the Commission française des archives juives in 1961 and was editor of the Franco-Judaica series . He became research director at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). He also taught the history of the Jews at the École pratique des hautes études and was a professor at the Sorbonne Nouvelle . Blumenthal was one of the editors of the 1971 Encyclopaedia Judaica . A conference was held in Vienna on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The contributions were published in an anthology in 2016.
