biography
After a few years in the Tyrolean national team, Gstrein was added to the team of the Austrian Ski Association in 1982. His first major event was the Junior World Championship in 1983 in Sestriere , where his best result was 13th place in the giant slalom. After good results in the European Cup and two national championships in 1984 in slalom and in combination, he was promoted to the national team. From the 1984/85 season he started in the World Cup and took his first World Cup points on December 8th in the giant slalom in Puy-Saint-Vincent . The next season came to an early end for Gstrein after a serious fall during downhill training in Val-d'Isère on December 4, 1985, in which he suffered a shoulder injury and a torn ligament in his left knee.
In his comeback season 1986/87 , the recovered Gstrein managed to catch up with the world's best. In December he finished in the top ten for the first time in the giant slalom in Alta Badia and in January and February he was able to place himself in the top five twice in the slaloms in Kitzbühel and Le Markstein . At the 1987 World Cup , he just missed a medal with fourth place in the combination. On January 12th, 1988 Gstrein celebrated his first and only World Cup victory in the slalom in Lienz . Five days later, he made it onto the podium for the second time in the Bad Kleinkirchheim slalom . He was also considered a candidate for a medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . In his special discipline, slalom, he narrowly missed the medal ranks in fourth, but in the combination he won silver behind his compatriot Hubert Strolz . With a seventh place at the end of the season in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , he reached seventh place in the Slalom World Cup in 1987/88 .
In the winter of 1988/89 , second place in the St. Anton slalom was his best World Cup result, but at the World Championship in Vail he was eliminated in the first slalom run. In the 1989/90 season he reached fifth place in the Slalom World Cup with three podium places. The next two seasons were somewhat less successful. Gstrein no longer took part in giant slalom competitions, but focused primarily on slalom. However, he remained without a podium and did not make it into the top ten in the Slalom World Cup. Even at the major events, he did not achieve any top placements. At the 1991 World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, he finished 14th and at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, 15th place in slalom.
In the 1992/93 season Gstrein remained without a podium. However, he was able to classify himself among the top 15 in all eight slaloms of the season, six times among the fastest ten, and achieved two fourth places in Lech and Åre . With these results he reached fourth place in the Slalom World Cup. At the 1993 World Championships in Morioka , however, he fell out of both slalom and combination. In the 1993/94 season , Gstrein regularly took part in giant slalom in addition to the slalom. In the giant slalom he drove four times and in the slalom six times in the top ten, making him sixth in the Slalom World Cup and 16th in the overall World Cup, his best overall placement. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he finished eighth in the giant slalom, but he couldn't finish the slalom.
From the 1994/95 season , Gstreins results deteriorated. Although he was able to score points in most races, he only made it into the top ten once more. In the winter of 1995/96 he did not reach any top 10 placements and lost his regular place in the World Cup team. He tried to get back through the European Cup. But that didn't work and so he ended his career in 1996. In total, Gstrein achieved 42 top 10 results in his twelve-year World Cup career (35 times in slalom and 7 times in giant slalom). He made it onto the podium six times in slalom and won one race.
