Bernhard Kübler (born July 4, 1859 in Krotoschin ; † May 12, 1940 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist and legal historian .

Life

Bernhard Kübler was the son of the grammar school teacher Otto Kübler (1827-1912), who went to Berlin from 1860 as rector of the Wilhelms-Gymnasium .

After graduating from school in 1876, Kübler studied Classical Philology at the University of Berlin . In 1881 he was with the dissertation De M. Valerii Probi Berytii commentariis Vergilianis Dr. phil. PhD . He then went on a longer educational trip and was a tutor in Sicily for some time.

After his return to Germany, he worked as a high school teacher in Berlin from 1884. In 1889 he became tutor to the sons of Prince Albrecht of Prussia . From 1895 he was a teacher at the Askanisches Gymnasium . In addition, he continued to pursue his academic career. After his habilitation in classical philology (1891), he held philological courses as a private lecturer at the university.

From 1887 Kübler was employed at the Prussian Academy of Sciences . On behalf of Theodor Mommsen , he published the Vocabularium Iurisprudentiae Romanae commissioned by the Savigny Foundation , which became his life's work. Kübler wrote the first volume (1903) together with Otto Gradenwitz and Ernst Theodor Schulze , the other volumes mostly alone.

In the course of his work on the Vocabularium , Kübler developed into a specialist in Roman law and, on Mommsen's initiative, received an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Greifswald . So it came about that he was finally able to leave the school service. In 1900 he was appointed associate professor for Roman law at the University of Berlin. The following year he was given a full chair in this subject and was no longer dependent on his salary as a high school teacher.

In 1912 Kübler left Berlin and went to Erlangen University as a professor of Roman and civil law . From 1914 to 1916 he took part in the First World War. In the academic years 1916/1917 and 1917/1918 he was Vice Rector of the university. He continued his teaching until after his retirement (1934).

Kübler was internationally recognized as a philologist and legal historian. He was an honorary doctorate in law from the universities of Greifswald, Athens and Thessaloniki and a corresponding member of various learned societies, such as the Society of Sciences in Göttingen (since 1931), the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1934) and the Prussian Academy of Sciences (since 21 November 1935).
