Bernhard Zondek (born July 29, 1891 in Wronke , Posen ; † November 8, 1966 in New York ) was a German - Israeli gynecologist , pioneer of hormone research and brother of the university professors Hermann Zondek (1887–1979) and Samuel Georg Zondek (1894 -1970).

Life

Zondek studied medicine in Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1919. He then worked as an assistant under Karl Franz at the Berlin Charité , where he qualified as a professor in 1923 for obstetrics and gynecology. From 1926 he was an associate professor at the "Friedrich-Wilhelms" University in Berlin . From 1929 to 1933 he headed the gynecological department of the Spandau Hospital. After the National Socialists took over Zondek on September 5, 1933, because of his Jewish origin, according to § 3 of the Professional Civil Service Act released from the medical faculty. Zondek worked for a year in Stockholm at the Biochemical University Institute, which was headed by Hans von Euler . In 1934 he went to Palestine, where he worked from 1935 to 1961 at the Hassadah Medical School of the Jerusalem Hebrew University as a professor for gynecology and obstetrics and as head of the hormone research laboratory there. He died on a trip in New York.

Bernhard Zondek created in 1928 together with Selmar Aschheim the first early test method for pregnancy detection , the rabbit test .
