Bernhardus Fountain Rastatt

The Bernhardusbrunnen of Rastatt was the occasion of the beatification of Margrave Bernhard II. Von Baden built.

Margrave August Georg Simpert von Baden took the beatification of his famous ancestor in 1769 as an opportunity to build a fountain at the upper end of Kaiserstraße in Rastatt . He commissioned the sculptor Ignaz Lengelacher to do this , who began building the complex in 1771. Only five years later, in 1776, the fountain was completed under his widow, Margravine Maria Viktoria Pauline .

The fountain made of red sandstone shows a young flag thrower in heroic ideal form and a relief medallion of Blessed Bernhard. The fountain has a plaque with the following inscription:

“After completion of the aqueduct from Eichelberg as a monumental fountain started by Margrave August Georg and completed in 1776 by his widow Margravine Maria Viktoria by court sculptor Lengelacher in honor of Margrave Bernhard von Baden, who died in 1458 on an imperial mission in the Piedmontese town of Moncalieri and was beatified in 1769.
