Bertha Drechsler Adamson

Bertha Drechsler Adamson (born Hamilton ; born March 25, 1848 in Edinburgh , † May 12, 1924 in Toronto ) was an English violinist, conductor and music teacher.

Drechsler Adamson, who was related to the cellists Louis and Karl Drechsler , initially took music lessons from her father, the pianist and organist Adam Hamilton , who taught at Edinburgh University . Together with her sister Emily , she studied violin with Ferdinand David in Leipzig for five years . In Great Britain she then appeared in her father's piano quartet, to which her brother Carl Drechsler Hamilton also belonged.

In 1869 she married and moved to Canada. 1887-88 she taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music and was a member of the Conservatory's string quartet. From 1895 she taught here again and later led the string orchestra of the Conservatory. From 1901 to 1904 she was first violinist of the Toronto Conservatory String Quartets . From 1906 to 1918 she was a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra led by Frank Welsman . Drechsler Adamson's students included Harry Adaskin , Frank Blachford , Julia Grover Choate and her own daughter Lina Drechsler Adamson .
