About this picture

Administrative division

Until its dissolution on October 2, 1990, the district consisted of 2 urban and 11 rural districts and was continued in the state of Thuringia, with the districts and municipalities also receiving new key figures that remained valid until the municipal reorganization on July 1, 1994. It was not until July 1994, when the law on the reorganization of the districts and independent cities in Thuringia (Thür NGG - Thüringer Neugliederungsgesetz) of August 16, 1993 came into force, that the districts (with the subordinate municipalities) and the independent cities received new code numbers. The Gera district now formed the easternmost part of the state of Thuringia .

coat of arms

Due to the seal order of the GDR of May 28, 1953, all regional coats of arms lost their meaning as brands or seals. However, the coats of arms of the cities and districts were still used on buildings or in publications without fulfilling an official function. The coat of arms of the Gera district used in some books actually shows the coat of arms of the city of Gera . The seal coat of arms of the GDR was official. It was not until the municipal constitution of the GDR on May 17, 1990 that municipalities and districts were able to expressly use coats of arms again and use them as seals.
