The Liezen district is a political district in the state of Styria .

With an area of ​​3,315.24 km², it is the largest district in Austria and larger than the federal state of Vorarlberg , with eleven adjacent districts it is the district with the most neighboring districts in Austria. With a population of almost 80,000 inhabitants (24 inhabitants / km²) it is rather sparsely populated in a national comparison. The most populous municipalities are the cities of Liezen , Schladming and Rottenmann . The largest municipalities in terms of area are Admont , Sölk and Landl .

As a result of the municipal structural reform in Styria in 2015, the district has expanded by amalgamating municipalities across district boundaries around the former municipality of Hieflau from the Leoben district .

The LEADER region Ennstal-Ausseerland is located in the Liezen district . It includes 18 member communities with 47,783 inhabitants of this district.

The Liezen district is divided into two areas, the Liezen area and the Gröbming political branch - this administrative structure is only available in this district. The district comprises a total of 29  communities , including fourteen local communities, ten market communities and five cities.

Cities in the district

There are five cities in the Liezen district: Liezen, Rottenmann, Schladming, Bad Aussee and Trieben. The oldest town in the district is Rottenmann. The town was granted town charter in 1279, making it one of the oldest towns in Austria. Schladming was granted town charter in 1322, Liezen in 1947, Bad Aussee in 1994 and most recently Trieben in 1996.
