Biagio Abrate

Biagio Abrate (born November 8, 1949 in Sant'Albano Stura , Piedmont ) is a retired Italian general . From January 2011 to January 2013 he was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces .

Military career

In July 2001 Abrate became Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Defense, and in February 2006 he was appointed Head of Cabinet. In these two functions, he served until 2010 under ministers belonging to both center-right and center-left coalitions. Abrate was promoted to major general in early 2003 and to lieutenant general in January 2007 . On February 10, 2010, Abrate became Secretary General and Head of Office of the Ministry of Defense and thus also "National Armaments Director ". At the end of November 2010, the Italian Council of Ministers designated him as the new Chief of Staff of the armed forces. Abrate took over this office on January 18, 2011 from General Vincenzo Camporini . On January 31, 2013, he gave it to Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli and retired.

In addition to his military training, General Abrate has a master's degree in political science ( University of Trieste ). He is a ski instructor and mountain guide . Abrate is married and has two sons.
