The 1st Biathlon Mixed Relay World Championship was held as part of the 2004/05 Biathlon World Cup finals on March 20, 2005 in Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia .

It was the first world championship for mixed relays, which was organized by the umbrella organization of biathletes, the International Biathlon Union , independently of the actual biathlon world championships . The competition was then integrated into the program of the world championships.

The first two laps of the 4 × 6 km relay were run by women, the last two by men. A maximum of 30 relays were allowed to participate in the competition. The best five nations, calculated from the points scored in the Nations Cup for women and men, were allowed to start with two, the remaining nations with a mixed relay.

In the following year, 2006, the Olympic Winter Games were the regular highlight of the season . Therefore, in 2006 only the not yet Olympic mixed relay was held as a world championship.
