The Bible moralisée with the title picture The Creation of the World is understood as a type of magnificently illuminated manuscripts of Gothic book illumination , in which illustrations of the Bible are compared with typologically "moralizing", that is, interpretive, images. The book type of the Bible moralisée was written around 1220/30 at the French court. The up to 2700 pictures were initially arranged with four pairs of pictures, i.e. a total of eight medallions arranged in pairs . In the Bibles moralisées , only the fronts of the parchment sheets were written on and painted.

A total of 14 manuscripts of this type have survived today. In addition to pure text manuscripts, there are richly illuminated copies, including the Codex Vindobonensis 2554 and the Codex Vindobonensis 1179 , both created around 1225 and kept in the Austrian National Library, the manuscript Ms. Bodl. 270b in Oxford, Bodleian Library , and the Bible of Louis the Saint , mostly in Toledo Cathedral .
