The University Library of Bozen ( Italian Biblioteca universitaria di Bolzano , English University Library of Bozen / Bolzano ) is the central science library and thus the most important service provider for research in South Tyrol , with around 600,000 visitors, 675,000 downloads and 150,000 print media loans per year .

purpose

With its printed and digital media holdings - mainly in German, Italian, Ladin and English - the library is a multilingual information center for the university and the territory and provides all users with relevant information for teaching, research and lifelong learning.

It is based in the main building of the Free University in Bozen (Universitätsplatz 1). There are other locations in Brixen (Faculty of Education, Regensburger Allee 16) and in Bruneck (Bruneck campus, Enrico-Fermi-Straße 6).

history

When the Free University of Bolzano was founded on October 31, 1997, no buildings were available. These first had to be planned and built. Until then, the libraries were temporarily housed: While the library at the headquarters in Bolzano was incorporated into the former regional hospital (Altes Spital) in downtown Bolzano, there was a corresponding agreement at the Bressanone site with the Philosophical-Theological University of Bressanone , whose library was significantly expanded and was rebuilt.

For the newly founded university, the libraries at the Bozen and Brixen locations were built as part of the new buildings (completion in Bozen 2003, in Brixen 2004). At the site Brunico a common building was constructed for the university library and the public library Brunico, 2013. Since 2017, the university library has also been offering its services for research institutes and start-ups in the NOI Techpark Südtirol in the Bolzano industrial zone.

Tasks and services

The main task of the University Library of Bolzano is to make demand-oriented information, data and stocks accessible for teaching, research and lifelong learning and to offer appropriate services.

The core tasks are:

  • the expansion of the digital library,
  • imparting information skills in the context of courses, target group-oriented courses and training courses,
  • the provision of different rooms for different types of teaching and learning,
  • the development of innovative services primarily for research, active participation in research projects and networking with national and international partners.

The library supports the research activities of unibz with the following services, among other things: support for the research information system, institutional repository Bozen-Bolzano Institutional Archive, bibliometrics, open access publication funds, university publisher bu, press, contract processing with external publishers.

In addition, all theses submitted to the Free University of Bolzano are checked with plagiarism software provided by the university library.

During the academic year, the library in Bolzano remains open until midnight.

Students who are writing their thesis, doctoral candidates and lecturers receive special access outside of regular opening hours on request. In Bruneck , students can use the library on seven days from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Media that are not immediately available can be requested via interlibrary loan and the document delivery service.

South Tyrol Science Library

Disclose holdings and make them visible in the joint catalog, combine library skills, pool resources regionally and nationally for the benefit of users, work on ensuring that all interested parties can easily and completely find specialist information - that is the common goal for the partners of the South Tyrol Science Library , which administered by the university library.

The increasing networking of smaller and larger scientific, specialist and museum libraries improves the options for researching and accessing the scientific literature and information resources available in the province of Bolzano . Linked to this is the free media transport between the various partner libraries, lending using a single membership card and the management of the borrowed media using a single library account.

Specifically, the library offers a free courier service between the location libraries as well as between the individual locations of the university libraries and the following public libraries: Schlandersburg in Schlanders , Vinschgau , Istitut Ladin "Micurà de Rü" in St. Martin in Thurn im Gadertal and the city library Meran .

Since 1997 the book holdings in numerous monastery libraries, selected parish libraries and private collections in South Tyrol have been cataloged as part of the “Development of Historical Libraries” project financed by the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation . From the beginning the data was hosted at the Free University of Bozen . In 2016, the ownership of the extensive database was transferred to the University Library of Bozen. Since the end of 2017, the EMS data has been integrated into the catalog of the “South Tyrol Science Library”.

Holdings and departments of the library

The library's media holdings are based on study and research areas of special institutions of the university (learning workshop, competence center for inclusion, competence center for regional history, language center, competence center tourism and mobility) as well as the five faculties of the Free University of Bolzano (13 bachelor and 16 master’s courses and 7 Research doctorate programs, EduSpaces with learning workshop and research and documentation center for South Tyrolean educational history; status August 2019).

The learning workshop as part of the EduSpaces is spatially integrated into the library at the Brixen location . The materials that are developed there based on educational research in cooperative learning arrangements are available in the library. So that the materials are easy to research, the virtual learning workshop platform was set up by the university library in 2015. The materials provided by the learning workshop are continuously categorized according to the framework guidelines for teaching in South Tyrol .

Due to the trilingualism of the Free University of Bolzano , media in German, English and Italian have priority. For years, the library has been successfully using approval plans (automated selection and acquisition of media) and patron-driven acquisition (customer-controlled acquisition).

The inventory is built up in the following subject areas: economics, law, agricultural sciences, engineering, education, psychology, sociology, computer science, art and linguistics. In addition, media from the fringe areas of science and media for language acquisition are purchased.

The media of the university library are set up as open access according to the Regensburg Association Classification (RVK). The entire media inventory can be researched in the online catalog.

In 2012, the meta catalog was replaced by a discovery system that offers the option of finding both electronic and printed media with a search query. With this, “The South Tyrolean Science Library” was implemented as a platform and cross-library search catalog in a new, modern layout and adapted for use on all mobile devices. In 2013 the university library changed the library system. She participated in Ex Libris ' Early Adopter Program and was the first library in continental Europe to go online with Alma from Ex Libris.
