history

There are numerous traces of Roman settlement, including an estate on the east side of the vineyard, which was discovered in the 1930s. Graves from the 5th and 7th centuries were discovered in the course of excavation work at the eastern exit of the village. In 1999, when the Merovingian Hall was being built, the burial ground was examined in detail and a large number of burial mounds were discovered. When the construction work was completed, the Merovingian Park was created there, a small archaeological park in which the burial mounds were made visible on the floor covering or as mounds that had been raised again.

The place was the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch Abbey for the first time in 770 as Biwingen documents in the Lorsch codex mentioned. In addition to other donations dating to AD 793, Dottighofen is mentioned in a document from 853. In these documents, viticulture in the area around Bad Krozingen is also mentioned for the first time, as it has been practiced on castle and vineyards for a long time. In addition to Lorsch, the Murbach Monastery in Biengen was also wealthy, on which the Lords of Biengen mentioned in the 13th century may have been dependent.

Sneweli Bernlap , Lord of Bollschweil, was the local lord in 1331. He was followed by the Lords of Blumeneck and the Lords of Neuenfels, before the local rule with Ludwig von Pfirt passed to the Lords of Pfirt in 1484 . Probably around 1500 the Biengen Castle replaced an older previous building.

In 1592 the local rule came to the House of Sickingen- Hohenburg. In 1651 Johann Reinhard von Pfirt (* 1620; † around 1674) married Maria Franziska von Sickingen-Hohenburg (1626–1693) and at the same time acquired local authority over Biengen again. Severe destruction led to the rebuilding and expansion of the castle by 1790.

Since the late Middle Ages, Biengen had been part of the Upper Austrian Breisgau , with which it came to the Electorate of Baden through the Peace of Pressburg in 1805 , which was elevated to the Grand Duchy of Baden the following year . In 1812 the local rule of the lords von Pfirt zu Carspach ended, for whom Biengen and Krozingen had been the center of their property on the right bank of the Rhine. The von Wangen, von Neveu and von Cornberg families inherited the von Pfirt family.

In 1945 the Biengen church was destroyed. The 1960s brought an expansion of the vineyards on the vineyard as well as the creation of an industrial area, which was later connected to the A5 via a bypass .

On December 1, 1971, the municipality of Biengen was incorporated into Bad Krozingen as part of the administrative reform.

The church of St. Leodegar is in Biengen. It was built in its present form in 1730, parts of the tower come from a previous building. 1986–1987 redesign by the Breisach artist Helmut Lutz . In 2010 the church roof was re-covered after storm damage. At the cemetery in Dottighofen is the Sankt Jergen Chapel, which is usually only used for burials. After the Imperial Austrian government banned cemeteries in the town center in 1785, burials were only carried out in Dottighofen. However, there were some personalities who were then buried directly at the Biengen parish church of St. Leodegar. These included Felix Anton Freiherr von Pfirdt (1713–1793) and Freiherr Friedrich von Wangen (1767–1851) as well as pastor Roman Schmidt (1799–1835).

The Merovingian Park around the Merovingian Hall shows Alemannic stone box graves on the Biengener burial ground, while the village museum has been housed in the town hall since 2005 and reports on the history of the place.

economy

In contrast to other districts of Krozingen, there had been a number of industrial areas in Biengen for a long time, which moved to the newly created industrial area in the 1960s. It has a motorway connection via the bypass.

For example, the Heitzmann large bakery is located in Biengen and operates over 90 branches throughout southern Baden.
