The 3934  m above sea level. M. high Bietschhorn is next to the Aletschhorn one of the most prominent peaks in the south, to the Swiss canton of Valais corresponding part of the Bernese Alps . It used to be called "Nesthorn" in the Lötschental . The north-eastern and southern slopes of the mountain are part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site .

On the north side, the Nest Glacier flows down towards the Lötschental. To the west of the Nest Glacier is the Bietschhorn Hut, from which the mountain is usually approached.

On the south side of the Bietschhorn, the Bietschtal and Baltschiedertal range from the alpine level down to the Mediterranean Rhone Valley . The south-facing Bietsch Glacier has meanwhile melted significantly. The Baltschieder Glacier feeds the Baltschiederbach with its two glacier tongues.

History and mountain hut

In 1233 the Bietschhorn was the first mountain in the Swiss Alps to be mentioned in a sales contract. Strictly speaking, it was about a meadow on the mountain, de Bietch . It was first recorded on a map in the Cosmographia description of all lenders in 1544.

After several ascent attempts by locals and guests, the first ascent by Leslie Stephen and his guides Joseph and Johann Siegen as well as Joseph Ebener succeeded on August 13, 1859 via the Lötschental via Bietschjoch and the north ridge.

After starting at a woodcutter's hut in the Nestelwald at 1890  m , the hotelier Lehner and the mountain guide Siegen built the Bietschhorn hut at the foot of the Schafberg at 2565  m, which still exists today . The hut consisted of a simple larch block construction with eight beds. In 1907 the Bietschhorn Hut was sold to the Academic Alpine Club Bern for CHF 3,500 . The AACB invested another CHF 1000 in the mountain hut. The accommodation was first expanded in 1908 to 12 and in 1922 to 25 straw beds. The first woolen blankets were in use until 1981. The straw mattresses were replaced by foam mattresses in 1968. A total renovation took place in 1970.

The mountain has meanwhile been adorned with 4 summit crosses. The first summit cross was carried to the summit by locals on August 27, 1940 and was blessed by Prior Siegen. The Lötschen mountain guide association created the second cross on October 5, 1968, which was destroyed by storm and wind. So on August 25, 1990, the third summit cross was erected, which was struck by lightning. Finally, on July 17, 2004, a metal cross was consecrated by the hut and later mounted on the summit.
