Biman Bangladesh Airlines ( Bengali বিমান বাংলাদেশ Bimān Bāṃlādeś ) is the state-owned airline of Bangladesh based in Dhaka and based at Dhaka Airport .

history

McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 of Biman Bangladesh Airlines

Biman Bangladesh was founded on January 4, 1972 and made its first flights in February of the same year on a Douglas DC-3 from World War II , which was given to the airline by the Bengali armed forces. A short time later, a Boeing 707 and a Fokker F-27 were acquired, with which international flights were possible.

The name Biman comes from the Bengali word biman , which translates as "airplane" and originally comes from Sanskrit - vimāna is a name for a flying machine mentioned in ancient Vedic literature .

In August 2006, the company announced that it would have to discontinue part of its international flights because it could not afford to pay for repairs to five of its then 13 aircraft. The Fokker F28 were at this time until her retirement in 2013, the oldest aircraft in the fleet, the two newly acquired in 1996 with Year 1977 Airbus A310-300 recent. Biman Bangladesh was also the last airline in the world to use the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 in passenger service after Northwest Airlines withdrew its last copies in 2007. Among other things, it operated the penultimate passenger DC-10 ever made. Biman received its first copy on August 16, 1983.

Due to the increasing unreliability of the older aircraft in particular, Biman had already submitted proposals to the government on several occasions to acquire new aircraft, most recently in 2005 plans to purchase the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 for a total of one billion US dollars - these plans however, were not implemented due to a lack of financial resources. On April 22, 2008, however, the airline finally announced the order for four Boeing 777-300ER and 787-8 aircraft each .

In January 2010, the company introduced a new color scheme with a Boeing 737-800 that was newly added to the fleet . However, just a few months later, both the new color scheme and the new logo were replaced by the old corporate design . In the same year, several Boeing 777s, which have since been given up again, were leased with an average age of 10.0 years.

On October 25, 2011, the company received its first new Boeing 777-300ER, which is also the 300th model of this model delivered. The second machine followed on November 22, 2011. With the 777-300ER, the company is introducing a new color scheme for the aircraft at the same time as the 2010 version was withdrawn. For the first time in the company's history, the planes are also equipped with personal in- flight entertainment .

From February 22nd to 24th, 2014 the airline celebrated the retirement of its last McDonnell Douglas DC-10 after the last scheduled flight on February 20th with several sightseeing flights from Birmingham . The machine was the last passenger DC-10 still in service worldwide, it was replaced by a new Boeing 777-300ER . The original plan was to transfer the machine to the USA as an exhibit, but this was canceled at short notice - the machine was instead scrapped in Dhaka.

As of October 27, 2014, the discontinuation of flights from Dhaka to Frankfurt am Main , which had only started a few months earlier, was announced.

The airline operates several domestic connections within Bangladesh as well as numerous connections to Asia as well as to Europe and the Middle East . Due to the low occupancy rate, the flights to the only German-speaking destination, Frankfurt am Main , were suspended after only six months at the end of October 2014.

  • On November 18, 1979, a Fokker F-27 had to make an emergency landing in a field due to an engine failure during a test flight and was irreparably damaged in the process. There was only the crew on board who survived the incident.
  • On April 3, 1980, a Boeing 707-300C crashed while taking off from Singapore . Shortly after the machine took off, it hit the runway due to a failure of all four engines . A possible cause is an incorrectly executed abortion by the pilots. All 74 people on board survived, the machine was damaged beyond repair.
  • On August 5, 1984, another Fokker F-27 (registration number S2-ABJ ) from Chittagong crashed while approaching Dhaka . After two unsuccessful attempts to land, the plane hit the water on the third 550 meters from the runway, killing all 49 people on board.

  • On July 1, 2005, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30ER with 216 people on board on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight 048 landing in Chittagong from Dubai came off the runway during bad weather and got stuck in the mud. Everyone on board survived and the heavily damaged aircraft was taken out of service.
