economy

Tourism and industry are important economic factors. In the northern part of the island there is the resort - "enclave" Bintan Resorts . Under Bintan Resorts is meant an area separated from the rest of the island area along almost the entire northern coast of the island, consisting of four designer golf courses and ten holiday resorts belonging to companies such as Swiss-Belhotel , Banyan Tree Holdings and Club Med .

Bintan supplies Singapore with drinking water through an undersea pipeline. When the drinking water reservoirs were built in the early 1990s, six villages with over 2,000 families were resettled, but the compensation was insufficient. During protests in January 2000, demonstrators cut the power supply to an industrial settlement, while others occupied tourist facilities. They demanded higher, retrospective compensation for the expropriations. The protests were put down and one person was shot.
