history

The area around Bisceglie was already inhabited in Paleolithic times by people who stayed in the karst caves of the mountains. Mighty dolmen tombs were built there during the Bronze Age .

In the course of history the area belonged to the Magna Graecia , to the Roman Empire and after its end it came under the rule of the Lombards . The place itself was founded by the Normans in the 11th century . The oldest remaining structural remains of the city wall and the mighty tower are dated around 1060. Already at this time until 1800 the place was the seat of a diocese (see also list of the bishops of Bisceglie ).
