The Bischöfliche Gymnasium in Graz is one of the most traditional schools in Styria. For over 150 years, this Catholic private school has offered students from all over Styria a wide range of general education with a focus on linguistic and communication. It is located in the Augustinum Graz in Langen Gasse in the 3rd district of Geidorf .

history

Austria's first boys' seminar, the Augustineum, was set up in Graz in 1842 to promote the next generation of priests. It was merged with the Carolinum, which was founded in 1830, and housed in the "Warnhauser'schen Haus" on the Graben at the corner of Lange Gasse, the current location of the school.

The steadily growing number of students in these two seminars made it necessary to found a school, which from 1856 could initially be run with a 1st and 2nd class. Until 1861, the majority of the students could be taught in the Langen Gasse, but the exams still had to be in the “1. k. and k. Staatsgymnasium in Graz ” . In 1895 the entire grammar school was granted public rights and the first high school graduates left the episcopal grammar school.

The school was opened to external students in 1899, making it one of the most important schools in Graz. In 1938 the high school and boarding school were closed by the National Socialists , and a large part of the building was then housed in a reserve hospital. Most of the former students of the school were accepted into the Academic Gymnasium Graz , including the later Styrian diocesan bishop Johann Weber . Like many others of his generation, Weber was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1943 after the 6th grade, first as an air force helper, and then in 1945 he was awarded the high school diploma by decree.

After the war, school operations were resumed and with the first Matura in 1952, the Bischöfliche Gymnasium started into a promising future: In 1968 a semi-boarding school was set up, from the 1970/71 school year external students who only attended the Gymnasium were accepted, in 1971 the separation of the management of high school and seminar, which still exists today. In 1976 the school got its own indoor swimming pool.

In 1994 there was another major change in the Episcopal Gymnasium: for the first time, girls were also allowed to attend school.

Recognizing the signs of the times, the grammar school has been using elements of the Marchtaler Plan, such as the Marchtaler Plan , the morning circle and social learning, to focus on educational reforms in its lessons since 2003 .

Since the school year 2008/2009, pupils from other Christian denominations have also attended the Episcopal Gymnasium. After a two-year renovation phase, during which the house in Langen Gasse was completely renovated, the Bischöfliche Gymnasium moved back into the renovated building - which is now called "Augustinum" - as the largest of eleven other institutions. The successful redesign of the grammar school offers an optimal framework for the design of lively lessons.

Current

School type

The Episcopal Gymnasium is a general high school . From the first grade onwards, English and computer science are taught, from the third grade onwards, Latin or French can be chosen; in the fifth grade then Italian or ancient Greek. (or - if French was chosen from the third grade - Latin is compulsory)

Free quiet work

This focus in the first and second grades opens up paths for students to concentrated, individual and cooperative learning. Independent still work promotes independence and independent learning as well as social development. This open form of learning leaves time and space for individual learning strategies and gives the students the opportunity to largely determine their learning pace themselves. The variety of methods increases the joy of learning and accommodates the various talents of the students.

The school day begins Tuesday through Friday with a free work lesson. At a learning buffet, students are provided with appropriately prepared learning content from the various subjects.

Social learning - morning circle

In a relaxed atmosphere on Monday morning, pupils have the opportunity to develop sensitivity and a sense of community through discussion and play in dealing with one another. Everyday challenges are discussed with the class board and possible solutions are worked out in order to contribute to a harmonious class atmosphere.

Theater, musical, instrumental music

A hallmark of the school is the theater group, which uses improvised play to create the basis for regular performances that delight children, young people and parents.

Due to the intensive cooperation of all creative forces, noted musical projects (e.g. 2010 “The right Track” with 180 students and 2017 the musical Joseph) are repeatedly implemented. There are also lessons in piano, organ, guitar and singing.

Choir

Based on a great tradition, the choir is still one of the liveliest institutions in the school. Singers from the first to the eighth grade develop classical and modern choral literature for liturgy and concerts at home and abroad under the direction of Valentin Zwitter. The school has been awarded the Styrian Meistersinger seal of approval annually since 2011 .

Day home school

In this all-day school type, which was one of only eleven Styrian AHS with the seal of approval of the Ministry of Education for special quality in school day care, after lunch there is the opportunity for pupils to study care and spend their free time until 5 p.m.
