Biskra ( Arabic بسكرة, DMG Biskira , tamazight ⵜⵉⴱⴻⵙⴽⴻⵔⵜ) is an oasis town in the province of the same name in eastern Algeria , at the foot of the Aurès mountain range, which has around 207,000 inhabitants. It was an important hub in the development of the Algerian Sahara and is an important supplier of dates .
In Biskra the Islamic expansion suffered a setback in 683 when the Berbers under their king Kusaila ibn Lemzem and the exarch of Carthage defeated the Arabs, with the fall of the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi .
In the summer of 1913 , Béla Bartók made recordings of folk songs by the nomads living there in the vicinity of Biskra .
climate
Today is the capital of the Wilaya (administrative district) of the same name and a popular winter holiday destination, as the temperatures there never drop below zero. In contrast, in the neighboring and higher Atlas-Wilaya Batna there is snow in winter.
