The Diocese of Armidale (Latin Dioecesis Armidalensis , English Diocese of Armidale ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Australia with its seat in Armidale , New South Wales .

history

Pope Pius IX founded it on November 28, 1862 from cession of territory from the Archdiocese of Sydney , to which it was also subordinated as a Suffragan diocese.

The Holy See granted the Archbishop of Sydney the privilege of appointing the Bishop of Armidale on January 28, 1863. In May of that year, the Archbishop of Sydney Bede Polding OSB appointed Samuel Augustine Sheehy OSB. However, this appointment was not recognized by the Holy See, which on January 23, 1865 appointed James Bernard Hayes OESA . In 1869 the first bishop was ordained and installed.

On May 5, 1887, it lost part of its territory to the Diocese of Grafton and five days later to the Diocese of Wilcannia .
