The Diocese of Kiev-Zhytomyr ( Latin Dioecesis Kioviensis-Zytomeriensis , Ukrainian Києво-Житомирська дієцезія ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in northern Ukraine . The church district today includes the Oblasts of Zhytomyr , Kiev , Chernihiv and Cherkassy .

St. Nicholas of Kiev was the co-cathedral of the Zhytomyr diocese from 1909–38

history

The Diocese of Kiev was founded in 1321. The first bishops are missionary bishops. Under Bishop Clemens (1466–73), Kiev became a permanent bishopric. He is building a cathedral. Between 1626 and 1751 the co-cathedral in Zhytomyr , today's cathedral of the Diocese of Kiev-Zhytomyr, was built. In 1778 the area was annexed by Russia and the Diocese of Kiev was abolished. Under pressure from the Orthodox Church in the city that was then part of the Russian Empire, no Catholic bishop was allowed to reside. In 1798, the Diocese of Kiev, with its seat in Zhytomyr, was re-established and merged with the Diocese of Lutsk to form Lutsk-Zhytomyr . In 1925 it was split into two separate dioceses, Lutsk and Zhytomyr; 1998 the name change by Pope John Paul II in Kiev-Zhytomyr . In 2002 the eastern part of the diocese was spun off into the Kharkiv-Zaporizhia diocese .

Diocese

On June 15, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed the Franciscan Father Petro Herkulan Maltschuk OFM with a personal title of Archbishop ("ad personam") as the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Kiev-Zhytomyr. The inauguration on August 5, 2011 in the Alexander Church was the first since 1680 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev itself; Malchuk was also the first shepherd of the diocese to hold the title of archbishop.
