Black Rock Shooter ( Japanese ブ ラ ッ ク ★ ロ ッ ク シ ュ ー タ ー , Burakku Rokku Shūtā ) is a Japanese media franchise based on a character design and a music video that includes original video animation , several mangas , video games and an anime television series.

content

The works belonging to the franchise contain different actions, often in completely different worlds. It's always about a girl with black hair, a glowing blue eye and a cannon with which she shoots stones, called the Black Rock Shooter. The anime is about the schoolgirls Mato Kuroi and Yomi Takanashi, who become friends but fall out because of Mato's friendship with Yū Kōtari. When Yomi disappears, Mato is looking for her in a strange world where she meets Black Rock Shooter.

The manga Black Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul is about the intermediate world Hazama, into which the dead find themselves who are unworthy of heaven and hell. Black Rock Shooter and others are trying to bring order to this chaotic world. In the game and manga Black Rock Shooter: The Game , Black Rock Shooter is awakened to protect humanity from an alien invasion.

Publications

Illustration and music

The franchise is based on the illustration Black Rock Shooter , which the artist Ryohei Fuke ("Huke") published on December 26, 2007 on his blog and on the Pixiv image platform . Ryo of the band Supercell was inspired by the picture for the song Black Rock Shooter , for which the voices of the Hatsune Miku synthesizer were used. Huke and Supercell then jointly produced a music video for the song, for which Huke contributed the illustrations.

Anime

In 2009, the Ordet studio, directed by Shinobu Yoshioka, produced a 50-minute anime film based on the published illustration and music. The script was written by Nagaru Tanigawa and Shinobu Yoshioka. The character design comes from Yūsuke Matsuo and Atsushi Morikawa and Emi Kesamaru were the artistic directors . The producer was Takanori Aki . A preview version of the film with individual scenes was released on September 30, 2009, the complete original video animation followed on July 24, 2010.

Also under Shinobu Yoshioka, Ordet and Studio Sanzigen produced an anime television series for the franchise in 2012. Mari Okada wrote the script, the responsible producers were Hiroaki Matsuura and Hiroshi Nakamura . Character designer was Yusuke Yoshigaki and the artistic directors were Emi Kesamaru and Tetsuhiko Nagashima . The eight 23-minute episodes were shown from February 3 to March 23, 2012 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) by Fuji TV in their Noitamina block, as well as 15 other network channels with an offset of up to two weeks. English, French and Italian versions have also been published. A German version was published by Nipponart in 2012.

It was followed in August 2011 by the role-playing game Black Rock Shooter: The Game , also by Imageepoch, for the PlayStation Portable .

Mangas

In 2011, the publisher Kadokawa Shoten started three manga series on Black Rock Shooter in quick succession . First, the Yonkoma manga Black Rock-chan ( ぶ ら っ く ろ っ く ち ゃ ん ) by Ringo in Yonkoma magazine 4-Koma Nano Ace began in April . The series from March 9, 2011 (Vol. 1/2011) to February 9, 2012 (Vol. 10/2012) and was also published in an anthology.

On July 4, 2011 (7/2011) the launch of Black Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul ( ブ ラ ッ ク ★ ロ ッ ク シ ュ ー タ ー - イ ノ セ ン ト ソ ウ ル - ) by Sanami Suzuki . The series ran in Young Ace magazine until May 2, 2012 (6/2012) and was summarized in three volumes. It was published in German in 2014 and 2015 by Egmont Manga and Anime .

From August 10, 2011 (9/2011) to August 10, 2012 (9/2012), Comptiq magazine ran the series Black Rock Shooter: The Game ( ブ ラ ッ ク ★ ロ ッ ク シ ュ ー タ ー THE GAME) by TNSK, which was also published in two volumes. It is based on the game previously released for PlayStation Portable. A German publication has been published by Egmont since July 2015.

reception

The television series was awarded the 65th prize of the Motion Picture and Television Engineering Society of Japan in 2012 for its technical implementation.

In a review of the Innocent Soul manga at Tagesspiegel , "cryptic hints, the epic-nebulous narrative style and the prevailing, all-encompassing melancholy" are named as trademarks of the Black Rock Shooter franchise. Innocent Soul is staged spectacularly. The straightforward panel structure supports the flow of reading, only in fight scenes it becomes confusing. The story offers "expressionistic colors, distorted perspectives, an extraordinary heroine in an abstract-futuristic world [...] with philosophical battle action" and is "a refreshingly fresh fantasy action experience" . The magazine Animania writes that each of the adaptations put the " delightful look of Black Rock Shooter and her colleagues " in scene in their own way and that the stories are " symbolic and cryptic" , including the manga by Sanami Suzuki. However, this makes it difficult to follow the story and this is therefore more something for lovers of an epic, nebulous and meaningful narrative style - in which, however, a story is actually told in the end. In addition, there is a shallow Girls' Love fan service between the two protagonists. The designs were close to to the template of huke, the result lies optically between " hard his -Strich, pretty looking girl and perspective playfulness" and the page layout is easy to read.
