action
Cinema version
At the beginning of the film, a heavily armed group of vampires penetrates a rock grave in Syria and frees an unspecified monster from his grave. A vampire is killed. The survivors take the monster with them.
In the USA meanwhile, half-vampire Blade, also known as "Daywalker", kills a person disguised as a vampire on his hunt. This is filmed by the vampire Danica Talos as it was an ambush planned by the vampires. From then on, Blade no longer only has to deal with the vampires, but also with the humans. When his hiding place is exposed and stormed by the FBI , Whistler destroys all secret data stored on the PCs and kills himself after giving Blade the opportunity to escape and, being shot several times, has no chance of escape. Outside, Blade is caught and taken to the police station, where familiars, servants of the vampires, interrogate him and Danica's troops want to transport him away. At the last moment he is freed by Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler. You belong to the underground organization "Nightstalker" and fight against vampires. He works with them reluctantly at first, but ultimately they are the last ones he has to support after Whistler's death.
From them he learns that the vampires woke Drake alias Dracula . When they first meet, Drake pretends that the vampires woke him up because they believed that he would make them daywalkers. However, Drake, who despises the weakened vampires, seems to have something like affection for Blade. He also admits that Blade is different and better than a common vampire. In reality, Drake is supposed to destroy Blade at the will of the Vampire. Because Drake can also live in sunlight without any problem and has the same abilities as Blade, paired with incredible physical strength and the ability to transform into any human being.
In order to finally destroy the vampires, the Nightstalkers have developed a virus called "Day Star", which is said to be able to destroy all vampires. However, its effect is too weak; to increase it extremely, a drop of Drake's blood, the forefather of all vampires, is missing because his DNA is still unadulterated. Then any vampire in the vicinity would be destroyed. However, there is a risk that the virus will also destroy Blade, since half of him is also a vampire.
Drake enters the Nightstalker headquarters and kills everyone except Hannibal, who was injured by him when he first met Drake, and Zoe, Summerfield's daughter, and kidnaps both of them to the Vampire headquarters. The vampires try to blackmail Hannibal with Zoe to find out what weapon the Nightstalkers are working on. Blade and Abigail follow them and the final battle ensues. Blade fights Drake who shows his real looks. Ultimately, Blade can mix the virus with Drake's blood, destroying him and the other vampires.
Drake transforms himself into Blade to distract the advancing police from Blade and calls him the "future of the vampires". Blade himself survives the virus and continues his fight that will never end. Drake - supposedly Blade - is supposed to be autopsied at FBI headquarters. When the doctors are about to begin the autopsy, he turns back into Drake.
Alternative Ending (Extreme Version)
The supposedly dead Blade is left behind by the Nightstalkers and is to be autopsied at the FBI headquarters. However, he wakes up and is able to escape.

background
- Originally, the fictional character Rachel van Helsing, descendant of Abraham van Helsing and an important figure in the comic book, was supposed to appear as the main female role alongside Blade . But since a film called Van Helsing was already being planned at the time of shooting , she became the character of Abigail Whistler.
- A central comic element are the stupid sayings, jokes and insults that Hannibal King utters throughout the film. Some of these are so drastic that they are more likely to serve as an argument for a high age limit for youth protection agencies than the explicit representation of violence.
- Labels in and in front of the police station are not only in English but also in Esperanto , for example "ROTĈAMBRO A" and "POLICA OFICEJO" (= command room A, police station), as are the labels on the walls in the police station. In the scene at the kiosk, the newspapers are printed in Esperanto, and the dialogue scene between Whistler and the kiosk owner is held in Esperanto.
- The role of the powerful bodyguard of Danica Talos is the US professional wrestler Triple H played.
- According to Marvel boss Avi Arad , a fourth film should also follow, although it has not yet been clarified whether Wesley Snipes will play his role again or Jones (see below) will take on it.
Television series
The US broadcaster Spike TV has been producing the television series Blade since the beginning of 2006 , which should continue the plot after the three Blade films have grossed over $ 400 million worldwide. The pilot, in which US rapper Kirk "Sticky Fingaz" Jones played the title role, was broadcast on June 28, 2006. The television series started on June 11, 2007 in German for the first time on ProSieben . After only one season, she was canceled again due to low ratings.
Novel to film
The official novel of the same name for the film was written by Natasha Rhodes and was published by Panini Verlag in December 2004 .
criticism
“Smug action film without tension, in which everything is facade, nothing substance. Self-referential jokes, fast techno rhythms and rapid cuts cannot hide the anemic plot. "
