Blase Joseph Cardinal Cupich (born March 19, 1949 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American clergyman and Archbishop of Chicago since 2014 .

Life

Blase Joseph Cupich, from a family with nine children, initially studied philosophy at St. Thomas University in Saint Paul (Minnesota) . As an alumne of the Pontifical North America College in Rome , he studied Catholic theology at the Gregorian University from 1971 to 1975 . At the Catholic University of America he completed a degree in sacramental theology in 1979 and received his doctorate in 1987 with the dissertation "Advent in the Roman Tradition: An Examination and Comparison of the Lectionary Readings as Hermeneutical Units in Three Periods."

He was ordained priestly on August 16, 1975 by the Archbishop of Omaha , Daniel Eugene Sheehan . He then worked as a pastor for many years. From 1981 to 1987 Cupich served as secretary to the apostolic nuncio in Washington, DC From 1989 to 1996 he was rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus , Ohio , the only Pontifical College outside of Rome .

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Rapid City on July 7, 1998 . The Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis , Harry J. Flynn , donated him episcopal ordination on September 21, 1998 ; Co- consecrators were Elden Francis Curtiss , Senior Archbishop of Omaha, and Charles Joseph Chaput, OFMCap , Archbishop of Denver .

On June 30, 2010 he was by Benedict XVI. was appointed Bishop of Spokane and inducted into office on September 3, 2010.

From 2008 to 2011 President of the USCCB Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People of the US Bishops' Conference. In 2013, Cupich became chairman of the National Catholic Educational Association , which he remained until 2015. In June 2014 Cupich criticized the current globalization, which he sees "not in line with Catholic social teaching".

Pope Francis named him the ninth Archbishop of Chicago on September 20, 2014. The inauguration took place on November 18 of the same year. On April 30, 2015, he announced a large number of new leadership appointments.

In 2015 he was appointed Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy USA NORTH CENTRAL of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by the Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien , succeeding Cardinal Francis George .

On July 7, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Bishops .

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola in the college of cardinals . As the first of the newly appointed cardinals, he took possession of his titular church on the following day.

On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education .

Positions

As Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Cupich spoke on January 29, 2017 in view of Executive Order 13769 of a “dark moment in US history”. He insisted that President Trump's order was a policy that discriminated against Muslims. Exceptions for Christians and non-Muslim minorities would be granted, "but not for Muslim refugees who want to save their lives".
