Location of the Tanga Islands in Papua New Guinea |
The Boang barn owl ( Tyto crassirostris ) is a species from the genus of barn owls that is believed to only occur on Boang Island in the Tanga group belonging to Papua New Guinea . It has long been considered a subspecies of the barn owl , but is viewed as an independent species in more recent literature.
features
The Boang barn owl is very similar to the Australian barn owl , but its plumage is noticeably darker than this, has a more strongly developed beak and stronger toes. The few owls that have been measured so far had a body length of 33 centimeters. Its distribution is presumably restricted to Boang Island. However, it cannot be ruled out that neighboring islands of the Tanga Group in the east of the Bismarck Archipelago may occasionally or even permanently be colonized.
Very little is known about their way of life. But it probably resembles that of other barn owls. As an endemic species confined to a very small island, it is particularly affected by habitat destruction.
