Bockerl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bockerl or Bockerlbahn (regionally also Bockl , Bockela , Bockerla , Boggala or Bockelbahn ) is the name given to railway trains on branch lines in Bavaria , which in the past were mostly pulled by steam locomotives. As a rule, a local name was added. The name was synonymous with both the vehicle material used and the route itself.

Today, in old Bavaria, small branch lines are generally referred to as Bockerl or Bockerlbahn. For example there are the names Holledauer Bockerl (for the Wolnzach – Mainburg and Langenbach – Enzelhausen railway lines ), Walhallabockerl , Falkensteiner Bockerl , Freystädter Bockel , Hauzenberger Bockerl , Allinger Bockerl , Friedenfelser Bockerl , Rottenburger Bockerl and the Neuhauser Bockerlbahn . The Chiemsee Railway , which is still operated by steam at times , is usually called the neutral Bockerl Railway , and sometimes also called the Chiemseebockerl to better distinguish it from the Chiemgaubahn . The Bockerlbahn cycle path now runs along the Landau – Arnstorf railway line, which was closed in 1994 . There is also the Bockl cycle path on the former Neustadt – Eslarn railway line .

Examples of the use of the name in Franconia are the Schääzer Bockerla from the Bamberg area, the Thurnauer Bockela from Kulmbach to Bayreuth, the Bechhöfer Boggala near Ansbach and the Naalicher Bockela and the Helmetzer-Bockela in the Hofer Land.

If there was only one such branch line in a region, then the name was not added. For example, the local line Dachau – Altomünster and the former Neuötting – Altötting steam tram were simply called Bockerl .
