Piano cabaret

During his piano cabaret performances, Wartke accompanies himself on the grand piano . He also uses instruments such as the ukulele , cajón and harmonica . The music and the lyrics are almost all my own. The texts are mostly German and are mainly characterized by puns and rhymes.

Wartke has written six piano cabaret programs to date. His first program was I think so I sing (premiere 1998), which he performed until 2012. This was followed by Achillesverse (premiered in 2003), which was shown for ten years. From 2006 to 2016 Wartke played his third piano cabaret program Noah was an archetype . His fourth program is called Klaviersdelikte (premiere in January 2012). Wartke's fifth piano cabaret program, What if? premiered on September 14, 2015. The sixth piano cabaret program Wandelmut premiered on February 4, 2020 in the cabaret stage Die Wühlmäuse in Berlin.

A frequently recurring theme in his songs is love, which he mostly addresses in a funny ( yes, honey! ), But also in a serious form ( To you , 90 degrees ). His love song achieved particular fame . This consists of a variable number of short stanzas with almost identical content, all of which are written in different languages. In 2011 Bodo Wartke had this stanza in 88 languages in his repertoire, including various dialects from the German-speaking area as well as constructed languages such as Esperanto , Sindarin , Quenya or Klingon . On his homepage you could listen to the translations with the love song generator and put them together. In addition, under the name of your stanza , Wartke has made love strophes available free of charge for around 600 women's names on the melody of his song Andrea on his homepage . With the publication of another 90 names for Valentine's Day 2018, Wartke ended his work on this project after five years.

Wartke also devotes himself to political and social issues in his songs. In Monica he reckons with a proclaimed hypocritical moral understanding of American society and George W. Bush's presidency; In The Americans , he satirically tackles anti-American clichés. Loveparade is an ironic hymn of praise to the techno parade of the same name , Gaffer a sarcastic commentary on the greed for sensation. In 2016 he wrote the song Not in my name in which he speaks out against radical interpretations of religions . In 2017 he developed his utopia of an ideal country in The Land I Want to Live in . In the song Hambacher Wald , published in 2018, he positions himself against the evacuation of the Hambacher Forest and the continuation of open-cast lignite mining .

Other recurring themes in his texts are everyday situations and the process of musical composition and performance. I don't trust myself and the last piece are a series of everyday situations that are characterized by a common connecting motif and that come to a head in the process. PCdenzfall is about the difficulties of working on the PC and the inadequacies of Microsoft's products. At the beginning of 2007, Wartke published four web episodes as a column on Apple and Microsoft on the website of the specialist magazine Mac Life . Dodecacophony and listen to me ! embed composition techniques and motifs from classical music in a framework story.

His repertoire also includes dance numbers and poems in which he accompanies himself as a tap dancer . His program Noah was an archetype contains the piano piece Alla Turca Stomp , which does not require any vocal accompaniment and is an adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's well-known Rondo from the piano sonata No. 11 . An edited version of Mozart's Sonata Facile is included in Klaviersdelikte .

Guest musicians such as the violinist Sonja Firker or the singer Melanie Haupt accompany him on selected performances . Several of his songs, including My New Girlfriend and Monica , have been covered by a cappella groups including Basta and Wise Guys . For a performance at a songwriting festival, Bodo Wartke sang the piece Andrea together with the group Viva Voce , as did Ja, Schatz! and the love song .

Plays

He makes his theater appearances with two programs. Wartke presented the one-man play King Oedipus in May 2009. In January 2011 this was also premiered in an ensemble version at the Wiesbaden State Theater . With this modern adaptation of the ancient drama and myth about King Oedipus , Wartke would like to address the question of providence or destiny. He performed the first two parts (later referred to as Episode IV and V based on Star Wars ) in his first stage program I think, so I sing . The prehistory to this is contained as episodes I and II in his program Noah was an archetype . Since 2009 he has been performing the approx. 100-minute piece separately from his other programs. A live DVD of this program was released in 2010.

On April 9, 2018, the follow-up play Antigone , also a modern adaptation of the ancient original , premiered in the Schmidt Theater Hamburg . Wartke is supported by his long-time stage partner Melanie Haupt. Both pieces are particularly characterized by the fact that the texts have been translated into a modern language and are largely performed in rhyme.

Orchestral appearances

In 2013, Wartke started the Swingende Necessity program . Instead of the usual solo piano cabaret, this is a swing arrangement of pieces from the previous programs as well as some new pieces. Wartke sings and dances while he is accompanied by the Capital Dance Orchestra . The recordings for a live CD took place in October 2013 in Berlin's Admiralspalast , the CD was released on September 12, 2014. The tour will continue, with a concert in the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt am Main in 2020 .

further activities

In 2005, Wartke founded the publishing house "Reimkultur Musikverlag GbR" after various music labels had refused to represent him. In the meantime, the "Reimkultur", which is now run as a GmbH & Co. KG, represents several artists. The company is committed to the common good economy and attaches importance to ecologically sustainable action (e.g. by packing the labels' CDs and DVDs with as little plastic as possible ).

From 2006 to 2011 he moderated the annual music festival Songs on a summer evening , which was organized by Bayerischer Rundfunk until 2009 and had already been an artist in 2002, 2004 and 2005. He led through the program with specially composed songs. Also in 2014 he appeared there again. Through the festival he became friends with the local regular guest Reinhard Mey .

In 2020, Wartke will host the songwriter festival Lieder auf Banz , which has been taking place on a summer evening since 2017 on the monastery meadow of the Banz monastery in Bad Staffelstein instead of the songs .

Bodo Wartke is also active in other projects: as a composer and musical director, he participated in a Hamburg production of Dylan Thomas ' play Unter dem Milchwald, and wrote a German libretto for Jacques Offenbach's operetta Orpheus in der Unterwelt . For Roger Cicero's album Relationally (2007) he wrote the text for The Call and for the 33rd German Evangelical Church Congress in Dresden the song ... there will be your heart (2011).
