Floor traffic lights refer to traffic light lights that are embedded directly in the street or sidewalk . In most cases, these are rows of LED lights on pedestrian bridges , immediately in front of the curb . The lights flash as soon as a tram approaches the pedestrian ford to warn crossing pedestrians. Floor traffic lights are also abbreviated Bompel called, a portmanteau word from Bo to and A MPEL .

There have been many reports in the press that they are particularly intended to prevent accidents with distracted smartphone users.

Use

At the end of 2010, Stadtwerke Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) installed red LED light strips as well as changed light signals and clear floor markings at a pedestrian crossing on the A line of the subway at the Lindenbaum stop . There has not been a fatal traffic accident on this route since the renovation (as of 2016).

In 2016 in Augsburg and Cologne , ground traffic lights were installed on a trial basis in the area of tram stops in order to warn so-called “ smombies ” (smartphone zombies ) of potential accidents. If these attempts are successful, further traffic lights will be installed. In Berlin, however, the city administration rejects the installation of floor traffic lights. In the meantime, the city of Cologne no longer wants to install any more floor traffic lights.

Other cities in Europe are now also testing the floor lights. In the Dutch municipality of Bodegraven, for example, an intersection is provided with a floor traffic light. Here, too, the main target group are smartphone users.
