The Pointer Sisters (1974), left Bonnie Pointer

Bonnie Pointer (born July 11, 1950 in East Oakland , California - † June 8, 2020 in Los Angeles ) was an American singer . She became known as part of the group The Pointer Sisters .

Bonnie Pointer formed a singing duo with her sister June in 1969. Two more sisters joined later, Anita and Ruth; together they formed the group The Pointer Sisters. The four sisters appeared in 1971, initially as a nostalgic act between 40s jazz , Dixieland and big band , funk , R&B and country to collect great success. The quartet won a 1974 Grammy for the country song Fairytale ; Bonnie wrote the song with her sister June. This hit helped The Pointer Sisters appear as an African American band on the popular country show Grand Ole Opry .

Bonnie Pointer recorded a total of five albums with her sisters before she left the group in 1978 to record solo records in the future. She signed a deal with Motown and released two albums in 1978 and 1979, simply called Bonnie Pointer . The single Heaven Must Have Sent You (USA # 11, R&B # 52) was a huge hit, especially in US nightclubs. Disputes with her record company prevented further success in the following years.

It wasn't until 1984 that Bonnie Pointer made a modest comeback . The record label Private I signed her for the album If the Price Is Right . The LP mainly contains high-energy and disco pieces. With the single Your Touch she had a small hit in the US R&B charts (# 35). In the same year she contributed the songs Heaven and The Beast in Me (1985, R&B # 87) to the soundtrack of the dance epic Heavenly Bodies . Since she did not have any major success, Bonnie Pointer disappeared again from the music industry.

She performed occasionally in the 1990s - with her sisters, among others. She was there in 1994 when the Pointer Sisters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . She was also a frequent guest at numerous American gay pride events.

In 2020, Bonnie Pointer died of a heart attack at the age of 69 .
