Boris Gardiner (born January 13, 1946 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican singer , songwriter and bassist . In 1986 he achieved a pan-European chart success with I Want to Wake Up with You .

biography

At the beginning of his musical career, Boris Gardiner played in the Carl Malcolm Band, the Dragonaires, the Aggrovators and the Crystalites. He also worked in the late 1960s for the Reggae - producer Byron Lee . In late 1969, the Jamaican made his solo debut with the instrumental single Elizabethan Reggae , a reggae version of Ronald Binge's Elizabethan serenade , which was initially released under a false name. Byron Lee was erroneously given as the interpreter. A week later a different printing appeared, this time misspelled because Gardner was printed instead of the surname Gardiner . In the sixth week after entering the chart in Great Britain, all errors were eliminated and the interpreter was honored. The song climbed to number 14 on the English charts in 1970 .

Although he continued to enjoy success in his homeland, Gardiner had no hits in the UK for over a decade . In the 1970s he was session and studio bass player in Lee Perry's Black Ark studio . In 1986 he recorded the pop single I Want to Wake Up with You , which surprisingly became number one in England in August of the same year and was in the top 10 for two months . The song also got high chart positions in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The follow-up single You're Everything to Me reached number 11 in the UK in late 1986. Friends and Lovers , which he recorded with Gwen Guthrie , was another, albeit small, hit in 1987.

Gardiner later signed a contract with RCA Records . Up until the end of the 1990s there were songs that did not reach any chart positions. The last single so far is Melting Pot , which hit stores in 1998. A few albums were released in the 2000s, including several best-of compilations .
