Atlantic crossing with Greta Thunberg

In August 2019 Herrmann brought the climate activist Greta Thunberg on the yacht Malizia II from southern England Plymouth to New York City where it performed at climate summit during the UN General Assembly September 23 to 29 2019. discussions on the Framework Convention on Climate of the United Nations wants to participate . Apart from Herrmann, the crew consisted of Greta's father Svante Thunberg , the filmmaker Nathan Grossman and Pierre Casiraghi , the founder of the Malizia team and Herrmann's co-skipper. 14 days were planned for crossing the North Atlantic. On August 14, 2019, the tour group set off from Plymouth to cross the Atlantic under heavy media coverage. The Malizia II reached its destination on August 28, 2019.

According to media reports, however, the trip caused significantly greater greenhouse gas emissions than if Greta had flown to the USA with her father. According to the team, several employees will sail the yacht back to Europe and will have to travel by plane to the United States. Herrmann himself will also take the plane for the return journey. The extensive media coverage of her departure from Plymouth probably caused more CO 2 emissions than a simple flight. In connection with this trip, Casiraghi's climate-critical activities as the majority shareholder of the airline Monacair came into the focus of reporting. However, the Malizia team has been offsetting its entire CO 2 emissions, including all flights, through compensation payments since 2018 .
