Borovička (pronunciation: [ˈbɔrɔvitʃka] ) is a Slovak spirit with juniper and is considered the national drink of Slovakia. It is distilled from juniper berries ( Juniperus communis , Slovak borievka obyčajná ), has a white or golden color and a taste similar to gin . Borovička produced today usually contains 38 to 45 percent alcohol . According to the Slovak Food Code, the alcohol content of Borovička should be at least 35 percent.

The following trademarks are protected within the European Union : Spišská borovička , Slovenská borovička Juniperus , Slovenská borovička , Inovecká borovička and Liptovská borovička . Only Borovičkas made in Slovakia can be sold under their respective names.
