Borries is the name of a Westphalian-Lower Saxon noble family ( letter nobility ). It comes from the patriciate of the city of Minden in Westphalia. In the 18th century, members of the family were entrusted as lawyers with higher state offices in Prussia , Hanover and Hessen-Kassel . Some also became officers. There were nobility awards, marriages in noble families and acquisition of rural property.

history

Gerhard Borries was a citizen and mayor of Minden from 1390 to 1394. Gerhard Borries (II.) Lived in Minden from 1390 to 1462 and was possibly his son. Hermann Borries was mayor of Minden in 1425. He belonged to the patriciate and was also head of the Nicolai poor house and is considered the common ancestor of all Borries who are listed in the family book. His descendants also belonged to the Minden patriciate and in the following 20 years were named in the documents as councilors, mayors, city treasurers, broodmen, scholars and heads of the Nicolai poor house and the Holy Spirit hospital.

After the Thirty Years' War, the city of Minden was represented by a mayor Borries at the Westphalian Peace Congress in Münster and Osnabrück in 1648 . After that, the close family association in Minden began to break up and many family members left the city.

Hanoverian line

In 1733 the first award of a nobility diploma by Emperor Charles VI took place. to the electoral Hanoverian secret judicial advisor and office director Johann Friedrich in Stade. It was confirmed in 1734 by the Elector Georg II of Hanover and founded the Hanoverian line.

Some of his descendants remained in the Duchy of Bremen , owned the Horneburg and Apensen estates there and were members of the Bremen-Verdenschen knighthood . The Minister of State Wilhelm Friedrich Otto von Borries , who was raised to the rank of count in 1860, comes from this branch .

Another branch returned to the Minden area and owned the Uhlenburg , Beck and Schorlemühle estates in the Principality of Minden . From this, the privy councilor Franz Christian von Borries acquired the manor Hovedissen in the county of Lippe in 1774 . Two years later, the family acquired the Steinlake estate in Ravensberg County . Later Gut Eckendorf in the county of Lippe .

Borriesstein in Herford

Philipp von Borries (1778–1838) inherited the Steinlake estate as entails and, afterholdingvarious military and political offices, became district administrator of the Herford district in 1832. His descendants held this position until 1933.

Westphalian line (expired)

In 1777 the second diploma was awarded by the Emperor Joseph II to the privy councilor Franz Borries , who had made great contributions in the Seven Years' War through large war deliveries. With the acquired assets, he established the ownership of the Westphalian family estates. Since he died childless, the diploma did not have any effect beyond his person.

Prussian line

Another nobility diploma was from King Friedrich Wilhelm III. awarded by Prussia to the chamber secretary Heinrich Johann Borries in Minden and his three nephews, the war councilor Diedrich Borries , the Grand Ducal Hessian major Philipp Borries and the tax trainee Ludwig Borries . It establishes the noble class in the two branches of the younger line.

The Bolivian branch

Three brothers in the family emigrated to Brazil , Bolivia and Chile at the end of the 19th century and each founded new family lines there. While the Brazilians and Chileans stayed in close contact with their German relatives and thus did not change that much in character, the Bolivian branch developed largely independently. It was able to maintain its unity over generations and today consists of more people than the German Borries. Most of them live in the big cities of Santa Cruz , Cochabamba and La Paz . Like their ancestors from Germany, many work freelance, as higher-level employees and especially in the field of justice. The President of the Supreme Court ( Tribunal Supremo de Justicia ) has been Jorge Isaac von Borries Méndez since 2014 . His daughter, the public prosecutor Mónica von Borries Orías, was assassinated in Santa Cruz in 2004. Ten years later, her memory was publicly honored in a ceremonial act with the unveiling of a bust. She was named "Martyr of the Public Prosecutor's Office".

Family motto
