The Kamay Botany Bay National Park (English Kamay Botany Bay National Park ) is a national park in the city of Sydney , New South Wales , Australia . The area was declared a national park in 1984 and covers 456 hectares. The park is located on both sides of the bay of the same name, Botany Bay , with the headlands north and south of the entrance forming the two areas of the national park.

history

On April 28, 1770, the Endeavor crew landed on their first circumnavigation of the world under the direction of James Cook in Botany Bay, where they met the Aboriginal tribe of the Eora .

Originally the bay was called Stingray Bay (bay of the stingrays ) because of the numerous stingrays swimming there . The area was named Botany Bay because the botanists who accompanied the expedition were extremely enthusiastic about the abundance of species in the flora. Because of this importance to the history of Australia, the national park protects both the cultural and natural value of the area. On the south side are the memorials of the landing and discovery of 1770.

Indications of the Aborigines who have lived there for thousands of years have been found in over 30 locations in the park. In 2002 the name of the park was expanded to include the word Kamay , a name for the bay in the language of the local population.

nature and landscape

The landscape is geologically shaped by Hawkesbury sandstone , which rises up to 40 meters in the shape of a cliff along the coast.

In the area you can find moist eucalyptus forests , grassy woodlands, heather and swamp areas.

In terms of mammals, there are mainly nocturnal animals in the National Park, for example the fox kusu , the common ringbuck and fruit bats . In addition, 92 species of birds and various amphibians and reptile species were found in the area.

Humpback whales , right whales and dolphins can be seen from the cliffs .
