Braldt Bralds

Braldt Bralds (* 1951 in Hoogkerk , Netherlands ) is a Dutch illustrator .

Bralds has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico for many years and has received several awards for his work. He publishes his works in well-known magazines such as Rolling Stone , National Geographic , Time and the German news magazine Der Spiegel , for which he has painted various covers since 1996. He was the most important artist involved in the exhibition series “Die Kunst des SPIEGEL”, which between 2004 and 2008 showed over 200 original illustrations in renowned museums in many European cities and in New York.

life and work

Bralds grew up in Rotterdam and has been fascinated by art since his youth. He taught himself to draw and thus developed his own style. He first worked as a commercial graphic artist in his home country and went to New York in 1978 after receiving an order from Time for a cover picture and doing an excellent job. In the US it quickly gained reputation among critics and collectors. He received the Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators , and he has also received several gold and silver medals. Bralds taught at the New York School of Visual Arts for a while, giving workshops and lectures around the world.

He prefers to work with oil on wood or canvas. In his colorful, detailed paintings, Bralds combines realistic representations with an overflowing imagination. His favorite motifs are cats.
