The various authors of the old French novel de Renart , written between 1170 and 1250, referred to the respective resumption and continuation of the episodes already available to them as branch (French; German branch, branch ) . The term was adopted from literary studies and today describes the individual branches of tradition and also special forms of medieval stories, especially of French origin.
